Am I Too Old to Start Training?
The short answer…No!
Am I too old to start exercising?
Many people quietly wonder this before reaching out for personal training.
The answer is simple.
No, you are not too old.
Strength training benefits people at any age but it actually becomes more important as we get older.
Why strength training matters as we age
As we get older, it is natural for the body to lose muscle strength, balance, and bone density.
This can make everyday things harder than they used to be, such as:
✔ Picking up the grandchildren
✔ Getting up from a chair
✔ Climbing stairs
✔ Carrying groceries
✔ Maintaining balance when walking
✔ Getting up from the floor
✔ Preventing falls
Strength training helps support the body so everyday movements stay easier and safer.
Strength training after 50, 60, 70 and beyond
Strength training later in life is not about lifting heavy weights or pushing your body to extremes.
It is about:
✔ Maintaining independence
✔ Improving balance and stability
✔ Supporting bone health
✔ Moving with more confidence
✔ Staying active for the things you enjoy
Even small improvements in strength can make a big difference in daily life.
Just ask any allied health professional
You do not have to take my word for it.
Ask any doctor, specialist, or physiotherapist and you will hear the same advice.
Strength training as we age is one of the most important things we can do to stay healthy, capable, and independent.
Real example from my own client
To give you some perspective…
My oldest client is 91 years old!
Her sessions focus on gentle strength training, balance, and mobility. The goal is not intense workouts. The goal is helping her stay capable, confident, and independent in everyday life.
Most of her exercises are done sitting in a chair, with the occasional little walk across the room.
And there is one very important rule.
I am not allowed to help her walk.
She takes great pride in showing me just how well she can do it on her own.
This is Elizabeth.
And honestly, she is incredibly inspirational.
She is the first person to tell you how important it is to keep moving and stay strong as we age.
At 91, she understands something many people learn too late. Strength and mobility are what allow us to keep living life on our own terms. When Elizabeth talks about the importance of staying active, I listen.
After all…
she is clearly doing something right.
The real question
If you have ever wondered whether you are too old to start exercising, the real question should be:
Can you afford to not start exercising?
If you don’t start now, in 12 months’ time your future self will wish you had started today
